Project Selection & Refinement

Optimizing Your Improvement Portfolio

Duration 3/4–1 day
Participants Business Leaders and/or Process Owners
Overview

Project selection is a critical task in starting – and sustaining – an ongoing cycle of value-adding improvement. Organizations that can invest in the right opportunities will see the biggest payoff and the most effective adoption of Six Sigma and Lean practices.

In this action-focused working session, we guide your leaders through the essential steps to establish a solid set of improvement priorities, from developing ideas through scoping and strategy selection. A central theme is the application of project selection criteria balancing what we call the "two Ms"

  • Meaningful – Projects that promise important returns in customer satisfaction, strategic impact, new revenue and/or cost reduction.

  • Manageable – Projects for which you have the necessary resources, support and control to get it done.

By developing and refining a Business Case for each high priority project, the session helps a leadership team build consensus around the need for focused, well-resourced change efforts.

Note that because project selection is a process, multiple working sessions may be needed to develop the final priorities and prepare projects for launch.
Objectives
  • Provide a roadmap and set of tools for change project prioritization and "portfolio management"

  • Assess current project opportunities and establish priorities for an initial set of projects

  • Practice key steps to scope/size projects for success, and identifying the right change strategy (e.g. Lean, DMAIC, "go-do-it," Redesign, etc.)

  • Build a solid rationale for chosen projects, allowing team leaders (e.g. Black Belts, Champions) to gain the support and resources they need

  • Initiate an ongoing process for leaders to effectively assess and deploy improvement resources
